Leave e-mails on the host If this is ticked then e-mails will be kept on the host after you have retrieved them. Normally e-mails are deleted off the host when you retrieve them, otherwise you keep getting the same messages over and over again. If this is unticked then e-mails are deleted off the host as you retrieve them. If you specifically delete an e-mail, such as junk e-mail, it will be deleted regardless of this option. |

Ignore e-mails that are not addressed to me If this is ticked then you will only be shown e-mails on the host that have your e-mail address (as set in the E-mail address field). If this is unticked then you will see all e-mails in your postbox on the host. This option is used in situations where many users share the same e-mail account. For example, you could have several alias accounts that all share the same postbox: sales@ourcompany.com questions@ourcompany.com jennifercox@ourcompany.com In this case, three aliases use the same postbox. By ticking this option you will only see e-mail that is addressed to jennifercox@ourcompany.com if that is the e-mail address on the account, otherwise you'll see e-mail for all three aliases. |

Connection options | |
![]() |
Use specified connection for both sending and receiving This will use the dial-up connection that you have set for this account whenever you try to send or receive e-mails. If another connection is already open, it will try and close that connection and then open a new one. You would use this option if your e-mail provider insists that you connect to their server using a specific dial-up connection, or, if you have set the connection to Any dial-up connection. |

Use the specified connection when sending, use any when receiving This will use the dial-up connection that you have set for this account whenever you try to send e-mails, but will use any open connection for receiving e-mails. If no connection is currently open when you go to receive e-mails it will use the one selected in the connection option. You would use this option if your e-mail provider insists that you connect to their POP server using a specific dial-up connection, but doesn't care how you connect to their SMTP server. |

Add quote marks to names on out-going e-mails If this is ticked then the From: field on your out-going e-mails will appear at the other end like this: From: "Jennifer Cox" <jennifercox@friendlymail.com> If this is unticked then it will appear like this: From: Jennifer Cox <jennifercox@friendlymail.com> Some e-mail servers do not allow quote marks " in e-mail addresses and will return e-mails as undeliverable. However, as using quote marks is now an established protocol this should not be an issue. |

Send plain text and rich text Your out-going messages will have two parts; an unformatted part (where all fonts, sizes, colours and formatting are removed, known as plain text) and a formatted part (where the message will appear at the other end as it appeared when you typed it, including all formatting, known as rich text). |
|
Note It depends on the e-mail program being used by the recipient as to whether the formatted version of your message is displayed or not. | ||

Send plain text only Your out-going messages will be stripped of all formatting (such as fonts, sizes and colours) before they are sent out. |

Use the first line of the message if the Subject is empty If this is ticked and you forget to fill in the Subject on your out-going message, the first line of the main message will be used instead. If this is unticked and you forget to write a Subject, the Subject will be left blank. Some e-mail servers will not send e-mails that have no Subject because they treat them as incomplete, so the safe option is to have this ticked. |
